This black, quite little player that looks much like MusicMatch Jukebox which is powered by Yahoo and MusicMatch Inc. stands up with… nothing, well at least except for the concept of playing music “from the web” as it is the first Web player. Let’s not be too harsh with this project powered by Mozilla because afterall it’s just in it’s developer stage yet it has plenty of addons which is good news. I must say i had a good laugh when i saw the tab entitled “Feathers”. It has a great support even if there are no forums yet; the blogs may have to compensate for that. The “mozilla touch” kicks in even in the design of the website.
An interensting fact is that the crew behind this project called “Pioneers of the Inevitable” had their contributions (hatchlings as they like to call it) over at Winamp and Yahoo! Music Engine. I think i don’t need to say that this player integrates more than well with the Firefox browser.
At this certain moment i would say there would be three problems with this player: the fact that it has a big load time, doesn’t have support for skins and there are no options for helping you configuring any kind of output plugin available.
It has a more than a user friendly interface, dynamic content as the GUI seems to be inherited from Firefox, which is not a bad ideea but a little more sound-related stuff would be kindly appreciated. So, if you know your whereabouts with Firefox you shouldn’t have any problems with this Web player.
I think what this player want’s to achieve is more than laudable because it encourages people to buy tunes (or at least “borrow” them by listening to them online) insead of stealing them.
Disregarding the privacy policies and all that other privacy related crap, i also had a nice laugh when i saw the ending of the subscription email:
Chirps, Pioneers of the Inevitable Songbirdnest.com
Here are some pictures with SongBird just to help you see how much it’s alike Firefox:
Well, if you like this project and want to get involved the first step would be viewing their resources page or why not, jobs.
Oh, i forgot to mention that it’s free but that isn’t such a big surprise isn’t it ? and you want to know why is that so ? because Mozilla’s behind it. Long live the power of choice and people who support open-source.
